The Little Flower

Since my mother’s death from cancer in 2005, whenever I encounter a rose in nature I am reminded of Saint Therese of Lisieux, who is commonly known as “The Little Flower”. Saint Therese is one of the most venerated Roman Catholic saints since apostolic times. Roses are traditionally associated with Saint Therese, and she is often depicted holding roses, surrounded by roses, throwing roses from heaven, or holding a crucifix covered in roses. The image of Saint Theresa and the roses appearing in this work echo that association. At the sight of roses, I feel Saint Theresa’s blessing for me, as well as for my mother’s soul.
